What is the true power of Microsoft Power BI?

Part 1 of 2: Addressing common historical challenges

By Alain Tremblay

In our current Microsoft-centric world, Power BI is making big waves. Many government organizations are now integrating the already included Power BI platform into their Microsoft 365 ecosystem to take advantage of its extensive data analytics feedback.

Furthermore, all around the globe, governments are simultaneously tasked with three often-conflicting expectations: to balance the budgets and stimulate innovation while also meeting, if not surpassing, citizens’ growing demand for service delivery. Investing resources into mining critical data is the first step in managing this aforementioned delicate balance.

Fortunately, government organizations understand the importance of the data available to them and are more than willing to invest time and energy into finding optimal ways to sift through the vast amounts of accessible data.

The main challenge, however, is that most organizations struggle with the amount of data they have to track and measure––many, quite frankly, aren’t sure where to start. As a result, organizations are losing out on invaluable metrics––often culminating in inaccurate auditing processes.

Compounding this problem is that the typical reaction is first to measure everything, which subsequently results in casting aside the analytics because of the overwhelming amount of information. The need for analytics leads to consultants, high costs, custom builds, and too much frustration for something that should be much more easily attainable.

So, what’s the solution? Start by removing the complexity. To implement proper compliance, reporting, and enforcement, start with the correct data. Seriously, why overcomplicate things with custom Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning when one sole platform can allow you access to all your desired analytics?

In response to these challenges, as mentioned above––Power BI can make analytics easy by removing the complexity and turning data into visuals––allowing you to make informed critical decisions quickly. Additionally, the Power BI dashboard is incredibly powerful and enables end users to share and access information in real-time from anywhere. Best of all, Power BI efficiently pulls data from multiple sources and streamlines them into one convenient spot.

However, there is still an additional and final step to analytics success. Power BI is, for all intent and purposes, the visual component of analytics. The real value comes from the connectivity and workflow ecosystem that connects with Power BI.

For instance, the organization’s workflow platform helps to manage each department and person’s tasks and processes. However, the functions and processes require measurement to establish KPIs. Therefore, before the visualization capabilities of Power BI can come to fruition, a solid understanding of workflow processes, ownership, and compliance must be created.

The proper workflow and process platform, such as WorkDynamics, will allow you to leverage your Microsoft applications fully. The result is an increase in productivity among workers thanks to a series of automated action features, a user-friendly interface, and communication between data silos.

Integrating Power BI into your Microsoft ecosystem is a no-brainer. Leveraging your Microsoft ecosystem by connecting it to the world’s most powerful document management creates a smarter workflow, making for a far more intelligent business. So what are you waiting for?
